Sea Witch Review

51M7GL6bTZL__SX328_BO1,204,203,200_Sea Witch is an origin story about Ursula from the Little Mermaid, told kind of in the traditional Hans Christian Anderson style with a bit of a modern twist.

Ever since her best friend Anna drowned Evie has been shunned as an outcast in her small fisherman’s village. Whispers follow her everywhere she goes accused of being a witch for ensnaring the heart of the crown Prince who happens to be her other best friend. One day a young woman who looks eerily like Anna approaches Evie and she can’t help but think that her friend has come back from the dead!

At times the pacing of the book was just a little off for me. There wasn’t really anything driving the plot forward in the first half of the book and it dragged a little bit for me. The second half did really pick up though and I really enjoyed trying to figure out who to trust and what was going to happen next.

I must be getting a bit cynical as I grow older because I found Evie to be super naïve at times and it kind of drove me crazy, I mean she chose to completely trusted Annamette when she knows absolutely nothing about her other than the fact that she looks like Anna. All of the legends and lore of the town say that mermaids aren’t to be trusted and even her aunt tried to talk Evie out of whatever she was doing. Iker started to see holes in Annamette’s story and tried to get more information out of her but Evie was so blinded that she overlooked all of it.

Other than that I found the premise of the book really original and kind of a throwback. It read like one of the old Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales and given the nature of the storyline I thought it suited the book perfectly. The characters and the setting was established very well and the twists and turns in the second half of the book kept me engaged and eager to read on!

⭐️3.5/5 stars Never thought I would be feeling empathetic for one of Disney’s most iconic villains!

Library Books Update

I am still really trying to utilize me local library and have at least have 1-2 library books on my TBR each month from now on. This month I still have Save the Date by Morgan Matson and Red Sister by Mark Lawrence left over from my last library haul to read and all I needed to pick up was Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. It’s been a few months now since I’ve read a Brandon Sanderson novel and I am definitely excited to get into Warbreaker to see what else he has up his sleeve!

OWL’s Magical Readathon

I was aware that the OWL’s Magical Readathon was happening in April but I honestly had no intention of participating… simply because I already had my set TBR for the month and I didn’t want to have to completely change it to comply with the prompts for the readathon. However when I had a look over them a few days ago I figured out that a good majority of the book I read this month actually fit the prompts!

5 Favourite Bookish Friendships

These are some of my favourite friendships that I have read in some of my favourite books!

Harry, Ron and Hermione – The moment that I think of friendships in books this iconic trio pops into my mind first! They are just so wonderfully supportive and in sync with each other, but are not completely devoid of drama and turmoil between them. They are able to overcome so much in their journey throughout the series and this is definitely a friendship you can look up to!

Eugenides and the Queen of Eddis – I love the rapport that these two share with each other. It is very relaxed and familiar even when they are in high stakes situations. Gen especially has a deep loyalty to Queen Eddis and will do anything for her, and the Queen will only use her power over Gen when he is being especially stubborn and only for his own sake. There is a shared respect between them and it was refreshing to read.

Kaz and his Crows – I love a rag tag group of individuals who would otherwise not even like or talk to each other that just comes together and works! The respect that Kaz has had to earn on the streets and how he worked his way up the Crows is quite entertaining to read. I love how he brought everyone together and he could see their potential and make them all feel powerful!

Blue and the Boys – Even though Gansey is the leader I still love that when they met Blue she so easily merged into this group. Their camaraderie and loyalty towards each other is wonderful to read. And I love the fact that even though Gansey is the one with the vision they will just accept his conclusions and continue on their way because they trust him so much.

The-Raven-Cycle-Maggie-Stiefvater

Iseult and Safi – I absolutely love this duo! I started this series a few months ago now and I actually have the last two books on this month’s TBR so I will be definitely finishing off this series in the very near future! I think it’s their loyalty towards each other that I love the most. That and their willingness to forgo their own safety in order to help the other… true companionship and friendship!

⚡️Harry Potter Update⚡️

519RmXyy9ELThis month I finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and I am actually already about 100 pages into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! I told myself I would wait until next month to start it but I couldn’t help myself…

Ah, the Half Blood Prince is a tricky one for me. One I love how this book advances the storyline whilst looking back through Lord Voldemort’s history. I think the lessons between Harry and Dumbledore are some of my favourite scenes in the series. Especially how much information we are being fed whilst still being in the realm of unknown. But again, the ending just kills me every time I read it. The first time I read the Half Blood Prince I actually had to put the book down and didn’t come back to it for a few days to finish it; definitely a few tears involved!

Dumbledore was always so integral to the overall plot line and a constant throughout the series that I almost didn’t think I could finish the series without him there. Spoiler the Deathly Hallows is without a doubt my favourite book of the series so I am glad I continued. This book is just a little bittersweet but also necessary, it just wouldn’t be the Harry Potter series if these events didn’t happen. I’m going to try and pace out my read of the Deathly Hallows and appreciate every sentence!
