2020 New Releases I wish I read

Since I’m not going to be buying any more books this year my TBR is kind of set for the rest of 2020 but there are a few new releases that have slipped through the cracks that unfortunately I am probably not going to get the chance to read this year.

5 NEW RELEASES I WISH I READ THIS YEAR ARE:

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Burn Our Bodies Down by Rory Power

Dark and Deepest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore

Queen of Volts by Amanda Foody

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Reading Update

True to my predictions for this November I am waaaayyyy behind my usual amount of books read. Usually at this time of the month I would be at around 9-11 books read but I have only managed to complete 6 right now. I have just been in a little bit of a reading slump/funk and I haven’t been in the mood to pick up anything. I am about 100 pages into Legendborn by Tracy Deonn right now and enjoying that, hopefully I will have that completed by the end of the week which will bring my tally up to seven. I can’t really foresee myself finishing anything else this month but I am still hopeful and going to try and keep my thoughts positive because there are just so many great books I really want to read!

⚔️An Ember in the Ashes Series Reread⚔️

It’s not long now until A Sky Beyond the Storm is released and I ended up completing A Reaper at the Gates just in the nick of time for it! This book really breaks away from the original premise and expands so much more upon the storyline. We really see each of the main characters have to undergo a myriad of challenges and obstacles they need to overcome in order to defeat the Commandant and the Nightbringer. They all go through so much turmoil and strife and yet it’s still not enough. I liked the fact that in these books they don’t end up saving the day and miraculously figure out a way to fix all the problems in the Empire. New problems are presented and unforeseen circumstances pop up all the time which is a realistic way to portray the story and keep me entertained. This book and the series as a whole so far just keeps me right at the edge of my seat, anticipating every move and plot twist. It is highly entertaining and thrilling and I am soooooo excited to recieve my copy of A Sky Beyond the Storm and see how this series will wrap up!

Library Update

I haven’t been prioritising any of my library books this month which is kind of a shame. I’ve only read one out of the four I currently have loaned out and that was Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust, I am going to try and get to the other though as soon as I can!

The Kingdom of Back Review

Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish—to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she’ll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be.

I can appreciate the journey of self-acceptance that Nannerl goes on throughout the course of the book, but I wasn’t all that attached to her. She seemed petty and jealous of her brother and his talents even though he is so dedicated to her and appreciates her talents above all else. It would be difficult as a young woman growing up in this time and how frustratingly sexist the people are and it is really displayed in the plot.

Wolfer again I wasn’t very attached to. Sure he profited off Nannerl’s composition when their father stole her work and passed it off as his but he always praised Nannerl and was just trying to emulate her. Their whole familial relationship was centred around their musical talents and putting so much pressure on children so provide for the family is a little problematic in my eyes.

The secondary plotline surrounding the Kingdom was what really kept me reading on. I wanted to find out what the three tasks where that Nannerl needed to complete to get her wish and how that shifted over the years she and Wolfer visited the Kingdom. Hyancinth was definitely an interesting character but in the end it was just a tad too predictable for me.

The prose was well done and the pacing was pretty consistent. I went into this book with pretty low expectations as I have found I am not the greatest fan of historical fiction, even if it has a fantastical twist and this stayed true. Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy this book at all, there was nothing inherently wrong with it and I don’t have any untoward feelings towards the tale I was just bored most of the time.

⭐️2/5 I can see why so many people love this book, just not for me…
